> On November 16, 2023 [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/) published a special report titled [How an Indian startup hacked the world](https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-hackers-appin/), documenting how the Indian firm Appin "grew from an educational startup to a hack-for-hire powerhouse that stole secrets from executives, politicians, military officials and wealthy elites around the globe."

> In response to the exposé, Appin filed a lawsuit in India against Reuters. Following a [preliminary court order](https://www.techdirt.com/2023/12/07/indian-court-orders-reuters-to-take-down-investigative-report-regarding-a-hack-for-hire-company/) issued by a district court in New Delhi on December 4, 2023, Reuters temporarily removed the article, noting that it "stands by its reporting and plans to appeal the decision." Following this, several other outlets such as [Lawfare](https://www.lawfaremedia.org/) also [removed some of their secondary reporting](https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-hack-for-hire-industry-death-by-a-thousand-cuts-when-theft-doesn't-work-troll) and the Reuters article has been [removed from the Internet Archive](http://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000/https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-hackers-appin/), effectively censoring the information.
